For this occasion the rich city of commerce was transformed into a large theatrical space with triumphal arches and 'tableaux vivants' as stage settings. The citizens and the princes acted as actors in a splendid parade, a battle array of four thousand participants, impressive tournaments and a huge firework display. This resulted in one of the most expensive and impressive festivities of the early modern period. The organizing municipality drew on various theatrical genres in an effort to bring about a renewal in the existing power relations between the Habsburg rulers and themselves, as well as the relations of the rulers with the population. Exactly how the city and the monarch were depicted was illustrative of the precious balance of power between the Habsburgs and the city fathers and of both parties toward their respective subjects. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 00 Philip|bII,|cKing of Spain,|d1527-1598|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/names/n78067330|xTravel|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005039|zBelgium|zAntwerp.|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79018141-781 600 04 Philip|bII,|cKing of Spain,|d1527-1598. 600 07 Philip|bII,|cKing of Spain,|d1527-1598.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/26669 648 7 1500-1599|2fast 650 7 Travel.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1155558 650 7 Kings and rulers.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 987694 651 0 Spain|xKings and rulers.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh87001766 651 7 Belgium|zAntwerp.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1204472 651 7 Spain.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204303 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|z9786613572707 830 0 Ludus ;|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no97031889 |vv. 11. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=460972|zOnline eBook.
