Sixty years later, it is considered a chronic disease rather than one that is invariably fatal. Although survival rates have improved, the very word continues to evoke a special terror and guilt, inspiring scientists and politicians to wage war against it. In Under the Radar, Ellen Leopold shows how nearly every aspect of our understanding and discussion of cancer bears the imprint of its Cold War entanglement. The current biases toward individual rather than corporate responsibility for rising incidence rates, research that promotes treatment rather than prevention, and therapies that can be patented and marketed all reflect a largely hidden history shaped by the Cold War. Even the language we use to describe the disease, such as the guiding metaphor for treatment, "fight fire with fire," can be traced back to the middle of the twentieth century. Writing in a lucid style, Leopold documents the military, governmental, industrial, and medical views of radiation and atomic energy to examine the postwar response to cancer through the prism of the Cold War. She explores the role of radiation in cancer therapies today, using case studies and mammogram screening, in particular, to highlight the surprising parallels. Taking into account a wide array of disciplines, this book challenges our understanding of cancer and how we approach its treatment. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 647 7 Cold War|d(1945-1989)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1754978 648 7 20th century|2fast 650 0 Cancer|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008100059|xHistory|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Cobalt|xIsotopes|xTherapeutic use|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85027515|zUnited States|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095330-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 0 Cold War|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh88005637|xHealth aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh00005598|zUnited States.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n78095330-781 650 0 Informed consent (Medical law)|zUnited States.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008104647 650 0 Radioactive fallout|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85110599|zUnited States.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n78095330-781 650 0 Radiation carcinogenesis|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85138566|zUnited States.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n78095330-781 650 7 Cancer.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/845317 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Cobalt|xIsotopes|xTherapeutic use.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/865910 650 7 Informed consent (Medical law)|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/973191 650 7 Radioactive fallout.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1087665 650 7 Radiation carcinogenesis.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1086911 650 12 Neoplasms|xhistory.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/ D009369Q000266 651 2 United States.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D014481 650 22 Cobalt Radioisotopes|xhistory.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/ mesh/D003037Q000266 650 22 History, 20th Century.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/ D049673 650 22 Human Experimentation|xhistory.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/ mesh/D006805Q000266 650 22 Patient Rights|xhistory.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/ D028701Q000266 650 22 Radioactive Fallout|xhistory.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh /D011847Q000266 650 22 Radiotherapy|xhistory.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/ D011878Q000266 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aLeopold, Ellen, 1944-|tUnder the radar. |dNew Brunswick, N.J. : Rutgers University Press, ©2009 |z9780813544045|w(DLC) 2008007751|w(OCoLC)212375892 830 0 Critical issues in health and medicine.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2005183339 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=246045|zOnline eBook.
