Through the stories of the men who worked in CCC camps devoted to soil and forest conservation projects, she offers a fascinating look into an era of utmost significance to the identity, citizens, wildlife, and natural landscape of the region. Rippelmeyer outlines the geologic and geographic history of southern Illinois, from Native American uses of the land to the timber industry's decimation of the forest by the 1920s. Detailing both the economic hardships and agricultural land abuse plaguing the region during the Depression, she reveals how the creation of the CCC under Franklin Delano Roosevelt coincided with the regional campaign for a national forest and how locals first became aware of and involved with the program. Rippelmeyer mined CCC camp records from the National Archives, newspaper accounts and other correspondence and conducted dozens of oral interviews with workers and their families to re-create life in the camps. An extensive camp compendium augments the volume, featuring numerous photographs, camp locations and dates of operation, work history, and company rosters. Satisfying public curiosity and the need for factual information about the camps in southern Illinois, this is an essential contribution to regional history and a window to the national impact of the CCC"--|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 610 20 Civilian Conservation Corps (U.S.)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79099497|vBiography.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001237 610 20 Civilian Conservation Corps (U.S.)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79099497|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 610 27 Civilian Conservation Corps (U.S.)|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/536299 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 Labor camps|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85073674|zIllinois|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n79053746-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Interviews|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85067568|zIllinois.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79053746-781 650 0 Forest conservation|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85050567|zIllinois|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79053746-781|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Soil conservation|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85124329|zIllinois|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79053746-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Geography.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/940469 650 7 Environmental conditions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1983362 650 7 Local history.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1001400 650 7 Labor camps.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/989882 650 7 Interviews.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/977644 650 7 Forest conservation.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 932069 650 7 Soil conservation.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1124293 651 0 Illinois|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79053746 |xGeography.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh00005919 651 0 Illinois|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79053746 |xEnvironmental conditions.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005384 651 0 Illinois|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79053746 |xHistory, Local.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh00005861 651 0 Shawnee National Forest (Ill.)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh86002227|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 651 7 Illinois.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205143 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Local history.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411631 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026049 776 08 |iPrint version:|aRippelmeyer, Kay, 1953-|tCivilian Conservation Corps in southern Illinois, 1933-1942. |dCarbondale : Southern Illinois University Press, 2015 |w(DLC) 2014020518 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=970824|zOnline eBook.
