Drawing on recent scholarship as well as other classical writers and later political thinkers, this book develops interpretations of the three historians' writings centering on their treatments of liberty, rhetoric, and social and political conflict. Sallust is interpreted as an antagonistic republican, for whom elite conflict serves as an outlet and channel for the antagonisms of political life. Livy is interpreted as a consensualist republican, for whom character and its observation helps to maintain the body politic. Tacitus is interpreted as being centrally concerned with the development of prudence and as a subtle critic of imperial rule"--|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 00 Sallust,|d86 B.C.-34 B.C.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79018348 600 00 Livy.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79015690 600 07 Sallust,|d86 B.C.-34 B.C.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1845526 600 07 Livy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/31019 600 10 Tacitus, Cornelius.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80145600 600 17 Tacitus, Cornelius.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 63691 650 0 Political science|zRome|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008109696 650 0 Republicanism|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85112977|zRome|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79039816-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aKapust, Daniel J., 1976-|tRepublicanism, rhetoric, and Roman political thought.|dNew York : Cambridge University Press, 2011|z9781107000575|w(DLC) 2010043977|w(OCoLC)670375492 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=352554|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
