For Montaigne, Hobbes, Locke, Hume and Rousseau, the native American 'state of nature' operates as a foil for the European polity. Challenging this tradition, The Imbalance of Power demonstrates ethnographically that the Carib speaking indigenous societies of the Guiana region of Amazonia do not fit conventional characterizations of 'simple' political units with 'egalitarian' political ideologies and 'harmonious' relationships with nature. Marc Brightman builds a persuasive and original theory of AmerIndian politics: far from balanced and egalitarian, Carib societies are rife with tension and difference; but this imbalance conditions social dynamism and a distinctive mode of cohesion. The Imbalance of Power is based on the author's fieldwork in partnership with Vanessa Grotti, who is working on a companion volume entitled Living with the Enemy: First Contacts and the Making of Christian Bodies in Amazonia. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Trio Indians.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85137565 650 0 Wayana Indians.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85096362 650 0 Akurio Indians.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85003078 650 0 Power (Social sciences)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85105976|zGuiana.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85057709-781 650 0 Group identity|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85057485|zGuiana.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85057709-781 650 0 Leadership|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85075480|zGuiana.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85057709-781 650 0 Masculinity|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85081797|xPolitical aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00005651|zGuiana.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85057709-781 650 7 Trio Indians.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1156791 650 7 Wayana Indians.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1172946 650 7 Akurio Indians.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/804007 650 7 Power (Social sciences)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1074219 650 7 Group identity.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/948442 650 7 Leadership.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/994701 650 7 Masculinity|xPolitical aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1011031 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE|xDiscrimination & Race Relations.|2bisacsh 650 7 Masculinity.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1011027 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE|xMinority Studies.|2bisacsh 650 7 Ethnic relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 916005 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE|xAnthropology|xCultural.|2bisacsh 651 0 Guiana|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85057709 |xEthnic relations.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh00005646 651 7 Guiana.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/2061077 651 7 South America|zGuiana.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /1240807 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aBrightman, Marc.|tImbalance of power. |dNew York : Berghahn, 2016|z9781785333095|w(DLC) 2016022366|w(OCoLC)957554692 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1237213|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
