Comparisons and Contrasts with the British Model -- Conclusions. 520 Drawing on a wealth of primary and secondary sources, this book explores how far imperial culture penetrated Antipodean city institutions. It argues that far from imperial saturation, the city 'Down Under' was remarkably untouched by the Empire. Only at certain times, such as during imperial crises, were citizens alerted to their place as imperial citizens, but in times of peace, operationalising a sense of this identity was far more difficult. Through an exploration of imperial loyalty leagues, school culture, ideas of imperial federation, youth organisations, the daily and weekly press and popular culture of the city, the book notes that there was an instrumental approach to Empire on the part of the Antipodean working class. Imperial ceremonies and traditions failed to embed themselves and by the inter-war years internationalism more generally challenged imperial values. The roots of imperial decline are found in the inter war years as various aspects of British imperial culture lost their grip. Indeed, many had struggled to implant themselves in the first place. 588 0 Online resource; title from PDF title page (EBSCO, viewed June 15, 2015). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1800-1999|2fast 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Colonies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/868456 650 7 Urban communities|yc 1800 to c 1900|yc 1900|xc 1914|yc 1914 to c 1918 (including WW1)|yc 1918 to c 1939 (Inter- war period)|zAustralia|zNew Zealand|zBritish Empire. |2bicssc 650 7 Colonialism & imperialism|yc 1800 to c 1900|yc 1900|xc 1914|yc 1914 to c 1918 (including WW1)|yc 1918 to c 1939 (Inter-war period)|zAustralia|zNew Zealand|zBritish Empire.|2bicssc 650 7 Social & cultural history|yc 1800 to c 1900|yc 1900|xc 1914|yc 1914 to c 1918 (including WW1)|yc 1918 to c 1939 (Inter-war period)|zAustralia|zNew Zealand|zBritish Empire.|2bicssc 650 7 HISTORY|xAustralia & New Zealand.|2bisacsh 650 7 British colonies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1910374 650 7 Urban communities|zAustralia|zNew Zealand|zBritish Empire |y19th century, c 1800 to c 1899|yc 1900 to c 1909|yc 1910 to c 1919|yInter-war period c 1919 to c 1939.|2thema 650 7 Colonialism & imperialism|zAustralia|zNew Zealand|zBritish Empire|y19th century, c 1800 to c 1899|yc 1900 to c 1909 |yc 1910 to c 1919|yInter-war period c 1919 to c 1939. |2thema 650 7 Social & cultural history|zAustralia|zNew Zealand|zBritish Empire|y19th century, c 1800 to c 1899|yc 1900 to c 1909 |yc 1910 to c 1919|yInter-war period c 1919 to c 1939. |2thema 650 7 History.|2ukslc 651 0 Australia|xHistory|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85009591|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002012475 651 0 New Zealand|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh87006595 651 0 Australia|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85009594 651 0 New Zealand|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh87006597 651 0 Great Britain|xColonies|xHistory|y19th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2007100239 651 0 Great Britain|xColonies|xHistory|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2007100289 651 7 Australia.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204543 651 7 New Zealand.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204542 651 7 Great Britain.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204623 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aGriffiths, John.|tImperial culture in Antipodean Cities, 1880-1939.|dBasingstoke : Palgrave Macmillan, 2014|z1137385723|z9781137385727 830 0 Britain and the world.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/no2011132053 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=998593|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
