Missouri's strategic access to important waterways made it a key site at the periphery of the Atlantic world. By the time of statehood in 1821, people were moving there in large numbers, especially from the upper South, hoping to replicate the slave society they'd left behind.; Diane Mutti Burke focuses on the Missouri counties located along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers to investigate small- scale slavery at the level of the household and neighborhood. She examines such topics as small slaveholders' child-rearing and fiscal strategies, the economics of slavery, relations between slaves and owners, the challenges faced by slave families, sociability among enslaved and free Missourians within rural neighborhoods, and the disintegration of slavery during the Civil War. Mutti Burke argues that economic and social factors gave Missouri slavery an especially intimate quality. Owners directly oversaw their slaves and lived in close proximity with them, sometimes in the same building. White Missourians believed this made for a milder version of bondage. Some slaves, who expressed fear of being sold further south, seemed to agree.; Mutti Burke reveals, however, that while small slaveholding created some advantages for slaves, it also made them more vulnerable to abuse and interference in their personal lives. In a region with easy access to the free states, the perception that slavery was threatened spawned white anxiety, which frequently led to violent reassertions of supremacy. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 19th century|2fast 650 0 Slavery|zMissouri|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh2010113255|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Slaveholders|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85123313|zMissouri|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n79029210-781|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Households|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85062594|zMissouri|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n79029210-781|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Farm life|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85047218|zMissouri|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n79029210-781|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Enslaved persons|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85123347|zMissouri|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n79029210-781|xSocial conditions|y19th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2001008858 650 0 African Americans|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85001932|zMissouri|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79029210-781|xSocial conditions|y19th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2001008858 650 0 White people|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85146547|zMissouri|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n79029210-781|xSocial conditions|y19th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2001008858 650 7 Slavery.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1120426 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Slaveholders.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1120418 650 7 Households.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/962162 650 7 Farm life.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/921052 650 7 Enslaved persons.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1120522 650 7 Social conditions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919811 650 7 African Americans.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 799558 650 7 White people.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1174816 650 7 Race relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1086509 651 0 Missouri|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79029210 |xRace relations|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh00007552|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 651 0 Missouri|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79029210 |xSocial conditions|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2001008858 651 0 Border States (U.S. Civil War)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2006006444|xSocial conditions |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2001008850 |vCase studies.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99001484 651 7 Missouri.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204724 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Case studies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2017026140 655 7 Case studies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423765 710 2 Early American Places (Project)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2010183395 776 08 |iPrint version:|aBurke, Diane Mutti.|tOn slavery's border.|dAthens : University of Georgia Press, ©2010 |z9780820336367|w(DLC) 2010026523|w(OCoLC)649077370 830 0 Early American places.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/no2011058929 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=343600|zOnline eBook.
