Summary |
Famous conductor Gábor Takács-Nagy conducted two masterpieces: the Cello Concerto No. 1 and Le cygne (The Swan) from The Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Saëns and Schumann's Symphony No. 4. By his side was Israeli cellist Mischa Maisky, dubbed the "future Rostropovich" and winner of the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1966. After Saint-Saëns's Concerto, the concert continued with The Carnival of the Animals, the composer's "fantasy", many of whose pages were musical parodies of his contemporary composers. Although it was not originally meant to be published, it was still to bring the author's life into the public spotlight, and the very famous Le cygne would be performed by the ballerina, Anna Pavlowa. Schumann's symphony and Saint-Saëns's concerto share the common element of connecting their movements seamlessly. Named Fantaisie symphonique, it reflects the composer's desire to break from the framework of classical symphonic structure. The themes run throughout the two works, giving the piece as a whole a cyclical feel. |
