Although Strong regarded himself as a theological conservative, he oversaw the transition from orthodoxy to a much more modern view of theology at Rochester. Over the course of his academic career, Strong's theology evolved as he sought to facilitate an ideological rapprochement between Christian orthodoxy and modern thought. This book traces the evolution of Strong's theology, particularly its movement in the direction of philosophical idealism and arguably pantheism. This book argues that Strong's theological journey and embrace of ethical monism was his attempt to bring together theological conservatives and modernists while trying to resolve tensions within his own thinking. In the end, Strong was unable to persuade modernists to embrace ethical monism or to convince conservatives that ethical monism was a legitimate theological option. Strong's attempt at a theological synthesis failed due largely to the contradictions which ethical monism produced within both Christian theology and philosophical monism. But Strong's journey had a significant impact on the direction of Rochester Theological Seminary"--|cProvided by publisher. 588 Description based on print version record. 590 JSTOR|bBooks at JSTOR Open Access 600 11 Strong, Augustus Hopkins,|d1836-1921. 650 0 Monism.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85086855 650 0 Theology.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85134665 650 0 Philosophy and religion.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85100999 650 0 Baptists|xDoctrines|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2007101883|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Monism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1025462 650 7 Theology.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1149559 650 7 Philosophy and religion.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1060826 650 7 Baptists|xDoctrines.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 827301 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 655 4 Electronic books. 710 2 Project Muse,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n96089174|edistributor. 830 0 Book collections on Project MUSE. 856 40 |uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv1qp9ggv |zOnline ebook.
