Named after its benefactor, the Diplodocus carnegii--or Dippy, as it's known today--was shipped to Pittsburgh and later mounted and unveiled at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in 1907. Carnegie's pursuit of dinosaurs in the American West and the ensuing dinomania of the late nineteenth century coincided with his broader political ambitions to establish a lasting world peace and avoid further international conflict. An ardent philanthropist and patriot, Carnegie gifted his first plaster cast of Dippy to the British Museum at the behest of King Edward VII in 1902, an impulsive diplomatic gesture that would result in the donation of at least seven reproductions to museums across Europe and Latin America over the next decade, in England, Germany, France, Austria, Italy, Russia, Argentina, and Spain. In this largely untold history, Ilja Nieuwland explores the influence of Andrew Carnegie's prized skeleton on European culture through the dissemination, reception, and agency of his plaster casts, revealing much about the social, political, cultural, and scientific context of the early twentieth century. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Carnegie, Andrew,|d1835-1919|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n50032468|xNatural history collections. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00006618 600 17 Carnegie, Andrew,|d1835-1919.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/10902 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 Diplodocus carnegii|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2019103415|xExhibitions|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2003003655|xSocial aspects.|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00002758 650 0 Fossils|xCollection and preservation|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85097151|xPolitical aspects.|0https ://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00005651 650 0 Paleontology|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85097123|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh00002758|zEurope|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85045631-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 0 Natural history|vCatalogs and collections|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85090224|xPolitical aspects.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh00005651 650 0 Dinosaurs in popular culture.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2013003413 650 0 Dinosaurs|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85038094|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh00002758|zEurope.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85045631-781 650 0 Dinosaurs|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85038094|xCatalogs and collections|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2006008264|zPennsylvania |zPittsburgh.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79054720-781 650 7 Natural history|xCatalogs and collections.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1034273 650 7 Diplodocus carnegii.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 2010813 650 7 Exhibitions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/918097 650 7 Social aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1354981 650 7 Fossils|xCollection and preservation.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/933168 650 7 Paleontology.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1051513 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Dinosaurs in popular culture.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1909474 650 7 Dinosaurs|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/894018 650 7 Dinosaurs.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/893996 650 7 Catalogs.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/848831 651 7 Europe.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1245064 651 7 Pennsylvania.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204598 651 7 Pennsylvania|zPittsburgh.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1205171 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Catalogs.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026057 655 7 Catalogs.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423692 776 08 |iPrint version:|aNieuwland, Ilja, 1970-|tAmerican dinosaur abroad.|dPittsburgh, Pa. : University of Pittsburgh Press, [2019]|z9780822945574|w(OCoLC)1046614059 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=2134601|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
