Brodie argues that the various workings of the PMO, PCO, the cabinet, parliamentary committees, and the role of backbench MPs puts a lie to the proposition that the prime minister has evolved into the role of a dictator of sorts with unchecked control over the levers of political power. He offers a much-needed corrective to the dominant thinking that a Canadian prime minister holds power without limits, approaching unchecked domination over party, caucus, cabinet, Parliament, the public service, and the policy agenda. In Brodie's view, the prime minister is not a tyrant. There are effective checks on executive power. The golden age of Parliament and the backbencher is probably now. The author's contribution is that of a former insider, someone who worked at the centre and witnessed the circumstances, many of them institutional in character, that constrain the prime minister. The book calls for sober second thought about many of the proposals for reform."--|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 610 10 Canada.|bParliament|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79058471|xPowers and duties.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00006958 610 10 Canada.|bPrime Minister's Office.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n89655568 610 16 Canada.|bParlement|xPouvoirs et fonctions. 610 16 Canada.|bCabinet du Premier ministre. 610 17 Canada.|bParliament.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 533129 610 17 Canada.|bPrime Minister's Office.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/652284 650 0 Legislative power|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85075839|zCanada.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n79007233-781 650 0 Executive power|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85046286|zCanada.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79007233-781 650 0 Separation of powers|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85120094|zCanada.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79007233-781 650 0 Federal government|zCanada.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008103642 650 0 Constitutional law|zCanada.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008101032 650 0 Prime ministers|zCanada.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh86005359 650 7 Politics and government.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1919741 650 7 Legislative power.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 995815 650 7 Executive power.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 917857 650 7 Separation of powers.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1112740 650 7 Federal government.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 922333 650 7 Constitutional law.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 875797 650 7 Prime ministers.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1076416 651 0 Canada|xPolitics and government.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85019334 651 7 Canada.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204310 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aBrodie, Ian Ross, 1967-|tAt the centre of government.|dMontreal ; Kingston ; London ; Chicago : McGill-Queen's University Press, 2018|z9780773552906 |w(OCoLC)1033560916 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1804545|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
