As the United States transformed from a slaveholding republic into a modern nation-state, what were the mechanisms by which citizenship was re- conceptualized? Among the multiple and contested visions of citizenship circulated during the Civil War, how did enslaved people come to be recognized as potential citizens? This book analyzes the process that produced the inclusive birthright citizenship manifested in the Fourteenth Amendment. African American women inserted themselves as members of the nation-state during the turbulent years of the Civil War crisis. They positioned themselves, rhetorically, as patriots for the Union cause. As self-identified patriots, enslaved women requested military protection from slave owners. Women fled to federal troops stationed in the city and sought a right to federal protection from abusive slave owners prior to the enactment of any emancipatory acts on the part of military policy or the federal government. This assumption of federal protection prior to the ratification of the Fourteenth Amendment, in a state outside the jurisdiction of the Emancipation Proclamation, suggests a deep investment in the ideal of a broad national citizenship that included the African American population. The litigating slave women of antebellum St. Louis, and the female activists of the Civil War period, left a rich legal heritage to those who would continue the struggle for civil rights in the postwar era. African American women would continue to play a critical role in their own liberation following the war"--Provided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 610 10 United States.|bArmy|xHistory|yCivil War, 1861-1865. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85140643 610 17 United States.|bArmy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 533532 647 7 American Civil War|c(United States :|d1861-1865)|2fast |0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1351658 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 1800-1899|2fast 650 0 Civil-military relations|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85026352|zMissouri|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79029210-781|xHistory|y19th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 African American women|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85001923|xLegal status, laws, etc.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99004999|zMissouri |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79029210-781 |xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Citizenship|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85026205|zMissouri|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n79029210-781|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Enslaved persons|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85123347|xCivil rights|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99004998|zMissouri|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79029210-781|xHistory|y19th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 African American women|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85001923|xCivil rights|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99004998|zMissouri|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79029210-781|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006167 650 7 Civil-military relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/862889 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 African American women.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/799438 650 7 Citizenship.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/861909 650 7 Enslaved persons.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1120522 650 7 Civil rights.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/862627 650 7 African American women|xCivil rights.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/799443 651 0 United States|xHistory|yCivil War, 1861-1865|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85140205|xLaw and legislation.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99004848 651 0 Missouri|xHistory|yCivil War, 1861-1865|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85086225|xLaw and legislation.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99004848 651 0 United States|xHistory|yCivil War, 1861-1865|xAfrican Americans.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85140208 651 0 Missouri|xHistory|yCivil War, 1861-1865|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85086225|xAfrican Americans.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006225 651 7 Missouri.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204724 655 0 Electronic book. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aRomeo, Sharon.|tGender and the Jubilee. |dAthens : The University of Georgia Press, 2016|w(DLC) 2015008712 830 0 Studies in the legal history of the South.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no95027442 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1217419|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
