But battlefield realities soon challenged this simplistic understanding of women's place in war. Stephanie McCurry shows that women were indispensable to the unfolding of the Civil War, as they have been--and continue to be--in all wars. With a trio of dramatic stories, McCurry explores unique facets of women's wartime experiences, each one of which played an important part in redefining the meaning and stakes of the Civil War. Clara Judd, a female spy who was imprisoned by the Union for treason, sparked a heated controversy over the principle of civilian immunity, leading to lasting changes in the international laws of war. The hundreds of thousands of enslaved women who escaped to Union lines during the conflict upended military emancipation policies aimed only at enslaved male soldiers. Union leaders responded by casting fugitive black women as "soldiers' wives," offering them a protection of sorts but placing a lasting obstacle on their path to freedom. In the war's aftermath, the former Confederate Gertrude Thomas wrestled with her loss of status amid economic devastation, social collapse, and the new freedom of her former slaves. War and emancipation touched even her intimate family, revealing the full extent of the break in history Reconstruction represented.--|cProvided by publisher 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 647 7 American Civil War|c(United States :|d1861-1865)|2fast |0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1351658 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 1800-1899|2fast 650 0 Women|zUnited States|xHistory|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2010118664|yCivil War, 1861-1865. 650 0 Spies|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85126634 |zConfederate States of America.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79063906-781 650 0 Women spies|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85147715|zConfederate States of America.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79063906-781 650 0 Enslaved women|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85147710|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n78095330-781|xHistory|y19th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Fugitive slaves|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85052242|xHistory|y19th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Civil-military relations|zUnited States|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008100840|xHistory |y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006167 650 0 Reconstruction (U.S. history, 1865-1877)|zGeorgia.|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008110546 650 7 Spies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1129772 650 7 Women spies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1178571 650 7 Enslaved women.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1178532 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Fugitive slaves.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 935940 650 7 Civil-military relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/862889 650 7 HISTORY|zUnited States|xState & Local|xGeneral.|2bisacsh 650 7 Reconstruction (U.S. history, 1865-1877)|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1754987 650 7 HISTORY|zUnited States|xCivil War Period (1850-1877) |2bisacsh 650 7 Influence (Literary, artistic, etc.)|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/972484 650 7 Women.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1176568 650 7 Women.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0001509 650 7 Womyn.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0001516 651 0 United States|xHistory|yCivil War, 1861-1865|xInfluence. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85140242 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 651 7 Georgia.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204622 651 7 United States|zConfederate States of America.|2fast|0https ://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205435 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aMcCurry, Stephanie.|tWomen's war. |dCambridge, Massachusetts : The Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, 2019|z9780674987975|w(DLC) 2018045331 |w(OCoLC)1074288711 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=2097354|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
