The National Association of State Librarians was established in 1898. In 1904 the name was changed to National Association of State Libraries. In 1957 it merged with the State Library Agencies Division of the American Library Association to form the American Association of State Libraries. In 1971 the name of the latter was changed to Association of State Library Agencies. In 1974 the Round Table on Library Services to the Blind of the American Library Association and the Association of Hospital and Institution Libraries merged to form the Health and Rehabilitative Library Services Division of the American Library Association. In 1978 the Association of State Library Agencies and the Health and Rehabilitative Library Services Division of the American Library Association merged to form the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies.
