Presenting his argument in a lucid and engaging style, Barahona explores the litigation of honour and dishonour by female victims of seduction. He successfully demonstrates that - in this region and era - female honour lost through sexual transgression could be redeemed through recourse to the law. Drawing from records of over 350 lawsuits, which took place between 1500 and 1750 (all primary sources, and all previously unpublished), Barahona offers new insights into the role of the secular courts in serving the interests of women. He does much to broaden our understanding of courtship, sexual practices, sexual vocabulary, marriage customs, cohabitation and violence against women. Sex Crimes, Honour, and the Law in Early Modern Spain will be welcomed by students and scholars in the areas of social history, women's studies, law and literature. 546 Includes some text in Spanish. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Sex crimes|zSpain|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh2010112785|xHistory|vSources.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002012008 650 0 Honor|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85061884 |zSpain|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79006971- 781|xHistory|vSources.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2002012008 650 0 Sex customs|zSpain|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2010112797|xHistory|vSources.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002012008 650 7 Sex crimes.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1114275 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Honor.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/960005 650 7 Sex customs.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1114306 650 7 Sexual violence.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/ homoit0001305 650 7 Sexual practices.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/ homoit0001299 651 7 Spain.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204303 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Sources.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423900 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 710 2 Archivo de la Real Chancillería de Valladolid.|bSala de Vizcaya.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ no2004055376 776 08 |iPrint version:|aBarahona, Renato, 1944-|tSex crimes, honour, and the law in early modern Spain.|dToronto ; Buffalo : University of Toronto Press, ©2003|w(DLC) 2004267090 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=468464|zOnline eBook.
