Summary "Set in 1907, the year of the first election under universal suffrage in Finland. Topi, a poor crofter (baritone), with his wife Riika (soprano) and children, is struggling to eke out a miserable livelihood in the bleak north Finnish backwoods. A marauding bear has killed their last remaining sheep; the Church coldly rejects appeals for help. Topi goes off to sell some game he has caught, and in the meantime a wandering pedlar turns up. He entertains the children with a ballad. Soon afterwards a professional socialist agitator appears in the village. If only the poor peasants and their wives will draw a red line on the ballot paper, their oppression will be at an end, and a new era of justice and prosperity will dawn. However, for Topi and Riika the agitator's promises turn out to be hollow"--Erkki Arni, The New Grove Dictionary of Opera.
