Specifically, Bahr argues that manuscript compilations from fourteenth-century London reward interpretation as both assemblages and fragments: as meaningfully constructed objects whose codicological forms and textual contents shed light on the city's literary, social, and political cultures, but also as artifacts whose physical fragmentation invites forms of literary criticism that were unintended by their medieval makers. Such compilations are not simply repositories of data to be used for the reconstruction of the distant past; their physical forms reward literary and aesthetic analysis in their own right. The compilations analyzed reflect the full vibrancy of fourteenth-century London's literary cultures: the multilingual codices of Edwardian civil servant Andrew Horn and Ricardian poet John Gower, the famous Auchinleck manuscript of texts in Middle English, and Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. By reading these compilations as both formal shapes and historical occurrences, Bahr uncovers neglected literary histories specific to the time and place of their production. The book offers a less empiricist way of interpreting the relationship between textual and codicological form that will be of interest to a wide range of literary critics and manuscript scholars."--book jacket. 561 Gift of Paul and Mary Haas. 600 10 Horne, Andrew,|d-1328|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n90656448|xManuscripts.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002012491 600 10 Chaucer, Geoffrey,|d-1400.|tCanterbury tales.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2010051825 600 10 Gower, John,|d1325?-1408|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n81039793|xCriticism and interpretation.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005576 600 17 Horne, Andrew,|d-1328.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /1953842 600 17 Gower, John,|d1325?-1408.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/70830 630 00 Auchinleck manuscript.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n81042323 630 7 Auchinleck manuscript.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /1364619 650 0 English literature|yMiddle English, 1100-1500|xHistory and criticism.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2008103098 650 0 English literature|yMiddle English, 1100-1500|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85043778|xManuscripts. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002012491 650 0 Manuscripts, Medieval|zEngland|zLondon.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2010100572 650 7 English literature|xMiddle English|xManuscripts.|2fast |0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1711342 650 7 English literature|xMiddle English.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1710961 650 7 Manuscripts, Medieval.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /1008422 650 7 Manuscripts.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1008230 650 7 Criticism and interpretation.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1198648 651 7 England|zLondon.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1204271 901 MARCIVE 20231220 935 596219 994 C0|bRID
