His 1927 "Show Boat with Oscar Hammerstein II" helped to set a new standard for musical theatre. This book is the first to provide a critical overview of Kern's musical accomplishments throughout his career. Stephen Banfield ranges from Broadway, to Hollywood, and to London's West End, drawing on unpublished manuscripts and scores to assess the composer's extraordinary oeuvre. Kern's life, personality, and working methods are given due attention, as is the development of his work from the early musical comedies through the collaborations with Hammerstein and P.G. Wodehouse up to the later film scores. Banfield focuses especially on the musical and lyrical structures of Kern's compositions, illuminating beloved works and shedding light on compositions often overlooked. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Kern, Jerome,|d1885-1945.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n80149466 600 17 Kern, Jerome,|d1885-1945.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/64072 650 0 Composers|zUnited States|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008117722 650 7 Composers.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/871620 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026049 700 1 Block, Geoffrey Holden,|d1948-|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n86802545|eauthor of introduction. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aBanfield, Stephen, 1951-|tJerome Kern. |dNew Haven : Yale University Press, ©2006|z0300110472 |z9780300110470|w(DLC) 2005035950|w(OCoLC)62536016 830 0 Yale Broadway masters.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n2003071939 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=204464|zOnline eBook.
