Summary Growing up in a progressive and affluent suburb certainly has its advantages, but not everyone reaps the benefits of their privileged surroundings. This book examines the differences that race, class, and gender can make, by focusing on the life stories of thirteen individuals, all of whom call Evanston their hometown. It also documents the rise and fall of the Civil Rights Movement in Evanston, an affluent suburb north of Chicago.
