In theory, most Americans continue to support the death penalty. But it is no longer seen as a theoretical matter. Prosecutors, judges, and juries across the country have moved in large numbers to give much greater credence to the possibility of mistakes-mistakes that in this arena are potentially fatal. The discovery of innocence, documented here through painstaking analyses of media coverage and with newly developed methods, has led to historic shifts in public opinion and to a sharp decline in use of the death penalty by juries across the country. A social cascade, starting with legal clinics and innocence projects, has snowballed into a national phenomenon that may spell the end of the death penalty in America. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Capital punishment|zUnited States|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2009118340 650 0 Guilt (Law)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85057759|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n78095330-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Judicial error|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008122557|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Capital punishment.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 846392 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Guilt (Law)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/949092 650 7 Judicial error.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/984666 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 700 1 Linn, Suzanna,|d1966-|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/no98133157 700 1 Boydstun, Amber E.,|d1977-|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/n2007044314 776 08 |iPrint version:|aBaumgartner, Frank R., 1958-|tDecline of the death penalty and the discovery of innocence. |dCambridge ; New York : Cambridge University Press, 2008 |z9780521887342|z0521887348|w(OCoLC)190967427 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=220410|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
