Summary |
The Orchestre de Paris joins forces with the French conductor Bertrand de Billy for a performance of Saint-Saëns's Symphony in A major and Schubert's massive Mass No. 6! Camille Saint-Saëns composed his Symphony in A Major (one of the five symphonies he ever wrote) in 1850, while he was finishing his school years at the Conservatoire and preparing the Prix de Rome -- he failed the following year. A very classical score, the Symphony in A Major draws its inspiration from the purest French symphonic tradition. The programme performed by the Orchestre de Paris is a bold one. It combines a youthful work by Saint-Saëns with Franz Schubert's Mass No. 6 in E flat Major, one of the composer's darkest and most powerful pieces. It is also one of the latest works Schubert wrote before he died prematurely at the age of 31. The Mass No. 6 was premiered after Schubert's death. With the support of Natixis, patron of the Orchestre de Paris. |
