Discovered by chance during the cold war, these evanescent high-energy explosions confounded astronomers for decades. But a rapid series of startling breakthroughs beginning in 1997 revealed that the majority of gamma-ray bursts are caused by the explosions of young and massive stars in the vast star-forming cauldrons of distant galaxies. New findings also point to very different origins for some events, serving to complicate but enrich our understanding of the exotic and violent. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Gamma ray bursts.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85052983 650 0 Stars|xFormation.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85127431 650 7 Gamma ray bursts.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 937600 650 7 Stars|xFormation.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1131674 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aBloom, Joshua S., 1974-|tWhat are gamma- ray bursts?|dPrinceton, N.J. : Princeton University Press, ©2011|z9780691145563|w(DLC) 2010038975|w(OCoLC)587249048 830 0 Princeton frontiers in physics.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2010149914 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=356468|zOnline eBook.
