How have Western films helped develop cultural and historical perceptions, attitudes and beliefs towards the frontier? Is there still a place for the genre in light of revisionist histories of the American West? This book re- invigorates the debate surrounding the relationship between the Western and frontier mythology, arguing for the importance of the genre's socio-cultural, historical and political dimensions. Taking a number of critical- theoretical and philosophical approaches, Matthew Carter applies them to prominent forms of frontier historiography. He also considers the historiographic element of the Western by exploring the different ways in which the genre has responded to the issues raised by the frontier. Carter skilfully argues that the genre has and continues to reveal the complexities and contradictions at the heart of US society. With its clear analyses of and intellectual challenges to the film scholarship that has developed around the Western over a sixty-five year period, this book adds new depth to our understanding of specific film texts and of the genre as a whole. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Western films|zUnited States|xHistory and criticism. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008113452 650 0 Myth|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85089365 |xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh00002758|zUnited States.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/n78095330-781 650 7 Western films.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1174006 650 7 Myth.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1031678 650 7 Social aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1354981 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aCarter, Matthew (Teacher).|tMyth of the western|z9780748685585|w(OCoLC)880787198 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=783908|zOnline eBook.
