Summary |
"When Louis ascended the throne in 1661, the French lacked confidence in their own culture, feeling that Italian--and certainly ancient Roman--work was superior. Louis changed all that, making the court at Versailles the brilliant center of culture and artistic splendor.... The principal composers at Versailles were Jean Baptiste Lully, composer of dance music for the court and for the plays of Molière, the religious composer Michel-Richard de Lalande, and the great miniaturist François Couperin."--Container. |
