Ernesto Chavez focuses on four organizations that constituted the heart of the movement: The Brown Berets, the Chicano Moratorium Committee, La Raza Unida Party, and the Centro de Accion Social Autonomo, commonly known as CASA. Chavez examines and chronicles the ideas and tactics of the insurgency's leaders and their followers who, while differing in their goals and tactics, nonetheless came together as Chicanos and reformers. Deftly combining personal recollection and interviews of movement participants with an array of archival, newspaper, and secondary sources, Chavez provides an absorbing account of the events that constituted the Los Angeles-based Chicano movement. At the same time he offers insights into the emergence and the fate of the movement elsewhere. He presents a critical analysis of the concept of Chicano nationalism, an idea shared by all leaders of the insurgency, and places it within a larger global and comparative framework. Examining such variables as gender, class, age, and power relationships, this book offers a sophisticated consideration of how ethnic nationalism and identity functioned in the United States during the 1960s and 1970s."--|cProvided by publisher 546 English. 588 Description based on print version record and CIP data provided by publisher; resource not viewed. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 Mexican Americans|zCalifornia|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2010101608|zLos Angeles|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79021240-781|xPolitics and government|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2002011443 650 0 Mexican Americans|zCalifornia|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2010101608|zLos Angeles|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79021240-781|xEthnic identity.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh00005645 650 0 Mexican Americans|xCivil rights|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85084500|zCalifornia|zLos Angeles |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79021240-781 |xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Chicano movement|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2006008351|zCalifornia|zLos Angeles.|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/names/n79021240-781 650 7 Mexican Americans.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1019072 650 7 Politics and government.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1919741 650 7 Ethnicity.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/916034 650 7 Mexican Americans|xCivil rights.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1019081 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Chicano movement.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1741555 650 7 Ethnic relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 916005 650 7 Mexican Americans|xEthnic identity.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1019104 650 7 Mexican Americans|xPolitics and government.|2fast|0https:/ /id.worldcat.org/fast/1019137 650 7 HISTORY|xState & Local|xGeneral.|2bisacsh 650 7 HISTORY|zUnited States|xState & Local|xWest (AK, CA, CO, HI, ID, MT, NV, UT, WY)|2bisacsh 651 0 Los Angeles (Calif.)|xPolitics and government|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008116078|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002012476 651 0 Los Angeles (Calif.)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n79021240|xEthnic relations.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00005646 651 7 California|zLos Angeles.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1204540 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|t"Mi raza primero!"
