The contributions present a case for asserting that Indonesian cities were not merely the backdrop to processes of modernization and rising nationalism, but formed a causal factor. Modernization, urbanization, and decolonization were intrinsically linked. The various chapters deal with such innovations as the provision of medical treatments, fresh water and sanitation, the implementation of town planning and housing designs, and policies for coping with increased motorized traffic and industrialization. The contributors share a broad critique of the economic and political dimensions of colonialism, but remain alert to the agency of colonial subjects who respond, often critically, to a European modernity"-- |cProvided by publisher. 546 English. 588 0 Print version record. 590 JSTOR|bBooks at JSTOR Open Access 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 Cities and towns|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85026130|zIndonesia|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n80083633-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Decolonization|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85036220|zIndonesia.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n80083633-781 650 0 Urbanization|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85141338|zIndonesia.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n80083633-781 650 0 Nationalism|zIndonesia|xHistory|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2010103305|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002012476 650 7 Cities and towns.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 861748 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Decolonization.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/889115 650 7 Urbanization.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1162722 650 7 Nationalism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1033832 651 7 Indonesia.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1209242 655 0 Electronic book. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 700 1 Colombijn, Freek. 700 1 Coté, Joost.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ nr96021750 700 12 |iContainer of (work):|aColombijn, Freek,|d1961- |tModernization of the Indonesian city, 1920-1960.|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2014096424 776 08 |iPrint version:|aColombijn, Freek.|tCars, Conduits, and Kampongs : The Modernization of the Indonesian City, 1920- 1960.|dLeiden : BRILL, ©2014|z9789004280694 830 0 Verhandelingen van het Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde ;|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n42025907|v295. 856 40 |uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.1163/j.ctt1w76ts6 |zOnline eBook.
