Through shared ownership, limited growth, and workplace democracy, these "activist entrepreneurs" offered alternatives to conventional profit-driven corporate business models. By the middle of the 1970s, thousands of these enterprises operated across the United States-but only a handful survive today. Some, like Whole Foods Market, have abandoned their quest for collective political change in favor of maximizing profits. Vividly portraying the struggles, successes, and sacrifices made by these unlikely entrepreneurs, Clark Davis writes a new history of movements and capitalism by showing how activists embraced small businesses in a way few historians have considered. The book rethinks the widespread idea that the work of activism and political dissent is inherently antithetical to business and market activity. It uncovers the historical roots of contemporary interest in ethical consumption, social enterprise, mission-driven businesses, and buying local while also showing how today's companies have adopted the language-but not often the mission-of liberation and social change. 588 0 Online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on October 13, 2017). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Business enterprises|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85018285|xPolitical aspects|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh00005651|zUnited States|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095330-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Small business|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85123568|xPolitical aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00005651|zUnited States|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095330-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Entrepreneurship|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85044149|xPolitical aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00005651|zUnited States|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095330-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Social movements|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85123979|xEconomic aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005484|zUnited States|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095330-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Business and politics|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2007101972|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Business enterprises|xPolitical aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/842607 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Business enterprises.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 842519 650 7 Small business.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1121223 650 7 Entrepreneurship.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 912787 650 7 Social movements.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1122657 650 7 Business and politics.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /842401 650 7 Social movements.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/ homoit0001322 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aDavis, Joshua Clark.|tFrom headshops to whole foods.|dNew York : Columbia University Press, [2017] |z9780231171588|w(DLC) 2016050678|w(OCoLC)974794470 830 0 Columbia studies in the history of U.S. capitalism.|0https ://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2014094647 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1628777|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
