Barred from high school or college by political discrimination, the authors left the cities for the countryside in hopes of redeeming their 'original sin' while making a difference in rural China with their hard work, only to find out that their idealism was futile in a mundane world and absurd time. Thus their pilgrimage to an illusory utopia turned into a painful search for truth and a tough struggle to liberate themselves against enormous odds. The book is the first and only collection of stories by members of a once marginalized and heretofore largely unheard-of group in contemporary China; 'The stories of these young 'exiled pilgrims' bring the reader uplifting examples of the resilience of the human spirit. Their stories are heart-breaking, but the voice is never cynical, and hope is a constant. Exiled Pilgrims is a treasure'-- Carole Head, High Point University; 'The stories compiled here detail the daily life of a strange and fascinating period, always with emotion, often with humor, showing that one can speak about serious things without being dry. Reading this book is an excellent and pleasant way to understand the real China under Mao'--Michel Bonnin, School for Advanced Studies in Social Sciences, Paris; 'These individualized accounts reflect the shining--and somewhat sad--lives of pre-Cultural Revolution zhiqing. Together with the valuable photos and rare documents, stories in Exiled Pilgrims give us a fairly comprehensive portrayal of the collective journey of pre-Cultural Revolution zhiqing'--Liu Xiaomeng, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Beijing"--Provided by publisher. 546 Translated from the Chinese. 588 Description based on print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 647 7 Cultural Revolution|c(China :|d1966-1976)|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1352662 648 7 1949-1976|2fast 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1949-|2fast 648 7 Since 1900|2fast 650 0 Youth|zChina.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2008114031 650 0 School-to-work transition|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh93009339|zChina.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79091151-781 650 0 Urban-rural migration|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85141328|zChina|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/n79091151-781|xHistory|y20th century|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165|vAnecdotes. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001294 650 7 Youth.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1183341 650 7 School-to-work transition.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1107947 650 7 Intellectual life.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 975769 650 7 Rural conditions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1101474 650 7 Social conditions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919811 650 7 Urban-rural migration.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /1162715 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Youth.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0001520 651 0 China|xIntellectual life|y1949-1976.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85024146 651 0 China|xHistory|yCultural Revolution, 1966-1976|vPersonal narratives.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2008114651 651 0 China|xRural conditions|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008100798|y20th century|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002012476|vAnecdotes.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001294 651 0 China|xSocial conditions|y1949-|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh87000602|vAnecdotes.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001294 651 7 China.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1206073 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Anecdotes.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423876 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Personal narratives.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1423843 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026049 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 Personal narratives.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/genreForms/gf2014026142 655 7 Anecdotes.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026044 700 1 Deng, Peng,|d1948-|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ nr93032775|etranslator,|eeditor. 776 08 |iPrint version:|tExiled pilgrims.|dLeiden ; Boston : Brill, [2015]|z9789004292031|w(DLC) 2015003527 |w(OCoLC)905068260 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=973917|zOnline eBook.
