The chapters examine a variety of conditions that have contributed to the contemporary environmental crisis, including abuse of power, economic greed, industrialization, deforestation, and unplanned waste management. They then discuss concepts from several different religious texts and traditions that promote environmental protection as a sacred moral duty for all humanity. Religious concepts such as dharma (duty toward Mother Earth), tikkun Olam (repair of the world), khalifa (people as deputies of God on earth), amanah (the universe as a trust in human hands), and paticca samuppada (dependent co-arising) are employed to argue that all the components of the biosphere are integral to the cosmos, each piece with its own value and role in the harmony of the whole. The book makes it clear that religions can become more "green" and play a helpful role in raising our ecological consciousness and supporting preservation of the environment into the future.--|cPublisher's website 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Nature|xReligious aspects.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh85090278 650 0 Ecology|xReligious aspects.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh95009476 650 7 Nature|xReligious aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1034594 650 7 Ecology|xReligious aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/901520 650 7 Environmentalist thought & ideology.|2bicssc 650 7 Interfaith relations.|2bicssc 650 7 The environment.|2bicssc 650 7 BODY, MIND & SPIRIT|xGaia & Earth Energies.|2bisacsh 650 7 RELIGION|xChristianity|xGeneral.|2bisacsh 655 4 Electronic books. 700 1 Shafiq, Muhammad,|d1951-|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/no2018134459|eeditor. 700 1 Donlin-Smith, Thomas Herrold,|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2009086653|eeditor. 776 08 |iPrint version:|tNature and the environment in contemporary religious contexts.|dNewcastle upon Tyne : Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2018|z9781527505308 |w(OCoLC)1013954232 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1848369|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
