Based on Binh's surviving writings from his thirty-seven- year exile in Portugal, this book examines how the intersections of global and local Roman Catholic geographies shaped the lives of Vietnamese Christians in the early modern era. The book also argues that Binh's mission to Portugal and his intense lobbying on behalf of his community reflected the agency of Vietnamese Catholics, who vigorously engaged with church politics in defense of their distinctive Portuguese-Catholic heritage. George E. Dutton demonstrates the ways in which Catholic beliefs, histories, and genealogies transformed how Vietnamese thought about themselves and their place in the world. This sophisticated exploration of Vietnamese engagement with both the Catholic Church and Napoleonic Europe provides a unique perspective on the complex history of early Vietnamese Christianity"--Publisher. 590 JSTOR|bBooks at JSTOR Open Access 600 10 Bỉnh, Philiphê,|d1759-1833. 610 20 Catholic Church|zVietnam|xHistory|y18th century. 610 20 Catholic Church|zVietnam|xHistory|y19th century. 610 27 Catholic Church.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00531720 648 7 1700-1899|2fast 650 0 Catholics|zVietnam|vBiography. 651 0 Vietnam|xChurch history|y18th century. 651 0 Vietnam|xChurch history|y19th century. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Biography.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01423686 655 7 Church history.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01411629 655 7 History.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aDutton, George Edson.|tVietnamese Moses. |dOakland, California : University of California Press, [2017]|z9780520293434|w(DLC) 2016035712 856 40 |uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.1525/j.ctt1kc6k5r |zOnline eBook.
