Summary Edith Mathis and Peter Schreier, singing Deutsche Volkslieder by Johannes Brahms. The very much acclaimed Swiss soprano Edith Mathis has not only performed various leading roles in great operas such as The Marriage of Figaro, Fidelio, Le Freischütz, The Knight of the rose); she has also sung Bach cantatas, with Karl Richter, as well as religious songs and Lieder, famong them Brahms's Deutsche Volklieder, with tenor Peter Schreier. Peter Schreier made his debuts at the boarding school of the famous Dresden boys' choir, the Dresdner Kreuzchor. He soon became the most famous classical music singer in GDR, during the cold war. Thanks to his profession and talent, he was able to travel West several time, to perform at Covent Garden, the Scala, the Metropolitan Opera and many more prestigious venues. In 1978, he was named member of the Berlin Academy of Arts, and in 2009, he was awarded the Royal Academy of Music/Kohn Foundation Bach Prize in 2009. With pianist Karl Engel, they perform a selection of Johannes Brahms 49 Deutsche Volkslieder.
