The contact quickly turned violent, fatal cannons were fired, and Morrell abducted young Dako, a hostage so shocked by the white complexions of his kidnappers that he believed he had been captured by the dead. This gripping book unveils for the first time the strange odyssey the two men shared in ensuing years. The account is uniquely told, as much from the captive's perspective as from the American's. Upon returning to New York, Morrell exhibited Dako as a 'cannibal' in wildly popular shows performed on Broadway and along the East Coast. The proceeds helped fund a return voyage to the South Pacific--the captain hoping to establish trade with Dako's assistance, and Dako seizing his only chance to return home to his unmapped island. Supported by rich, newly found archives, this wide-ranging volume traces the voyage to its extraordinary ends and en route decrypts Morrell's ambiguous character, the mythic qualities of Dako's life, and the two men's infusion into American literature--Dako inspired Melville's Queequeg, for example. The encounters confound indigenous peoples and Americans alike as both puzzle over what it is to be truly human and alive"--|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 00 Dako.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2014063362 600 07 Dako.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1990960 600 10 Morrell, Benjamin,|d1795-1839.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/nr89009040 600 10 Morrell, Benjamin,|d1795-1839|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/nr89009040|xTravel|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005039|zPapua New Guinea.|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n81034915-781 600 17 Morrell, Benjamin,|d1795-1839.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/254283 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 1800-1899|2fast 650 0 Ship captains|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85121575|zConnecticut|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79074102-781|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Indigenous peoples|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85090174|zPapua New Guinea|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n81034915-781|vBiography.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 First contact (Anthropology)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85080313|zPapua New Guinea|0https:/ /id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n81034915-781|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006167 650 0 Kidnapping|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85072244|zPapua New Guinea|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n81034915-781|xHistory|y19th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Sideshows|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh95007904|zNew York (State)|zNew York|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/names/n79007751-781|xHistory|y19th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 7 Travel.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1155558 650 7 Discoveries in geography.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/894950 650 7 Ship captains.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1116147 650 7 Indigenous peoples.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 970213 650 7 First contact (Anthropology)|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/925765 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Kidnapping.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/987322 650 7 Sideshows.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1118156 651 0 Papua New Guinea|xDescription and travel.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008116520 651 0 Papua New Guinea|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n81034915|xDiscovery and exploration.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99002238 651 7 Papua New Guinea.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1212610 651 7 Connecticut.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205688 651 7 New York (State)|zNew York.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/1204333 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026049 776 08 |iPrint version:|aFairhead, James, 1962-|tCaptain and "the cannibal"|z9780300198775|w(DLC) 2014029610 |w(OCoLC)886493431 830 0 New directions in narrative history.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2011002638 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=944159|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
