Rather than a territorial space in anarchy, regions such as those examined in this study operate under unwritten rules governing the social, financial, economic, and political behavior of the inhabitants. As a result, there is a logic amidst the seeming chaos that is the fabric of these societies -- fragmented societies where unspoken laws and social norms are understood and obeyed and where justice, job creation, social services, and the power of life and death are in the hands of non-state actors. This study examines different forms of alternative governance in the absence of a strong state presence in the Northern Triangle of Central America -- along part of the Guatemala-Honduras border -- a region notorious for its soaring homicide rates, corruption, violence, and emigration to the United States. The purpose of the study is to shed light on the complex and interwoven issues that drive the current crisis of governance in the region and spill over with increasing frequency into strategic issues for the United States"--Publisher's web site. 546 English. 588 Description based on online resource; title from PDF title page (CSIS, viewed September 22, 2015). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 1979-|2fast 648 7 Since 1979|2fast 650 0 Non-state actors (International relations)|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2007010917|zCentral America.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85021871-781 650 7 Non-state actors (International relations)|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1744766 650 7 Politics and government.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1919741 650 7 International relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/977053 650 7 LAW / International.|2bisacsh 650 7 Diplomatic relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1907412 651 0 Central America|xPolitics and government|y1979-|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85021888 651 0 United States|xForeign relations|zCentral America.|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2007100428 651 0 Central America|xForeign relations|zUnited States.|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008114610 651 7 Central America.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1244535 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 4 Electronic books. 700 1 Meacham, Carl Elliott,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n89607893|eauthor. 710 2 Center for Strategic and International Studies (Washington, D.C.).|bAmericas Program,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n94091850|eissuing body. 710 2 Center for Strategic and International Studies (Washington, D.C.),|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n86119921 |epublisher. 776 |z1-4422-5884-5 830 0 CSIS report.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n94076763 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1072363|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
