| Summary |
"Jack Teagarden, the most important trombonist of traditional jazz, was burned out and exhausted when [in] 1963 he checked into the Prima Conti Hotel in New Orleans with his sextet. He suffered from a chronic breathing allent [i.e. ailment] ... [that] made every performance an ordeal for him.... After his final performance on January 7, he was seen no more. It was later determined that he had lain ... in the hotel for a whole week. It was there that he was found dead with his face to the ground on January 15--wearing his dress shirt as if ready for his next performance."--Notes, p. 27. |
