Summary |
Program # 823: Title: The fight for free speech. "The history of free speech in America is an accurate measure of the evolution of American democracy. During the 20th century there were recurring attempts at limiting the right of political protest and censoring artistic expression. These were successfully countered by the activism of citizens groups and public officials committed to the broadest expression of free speech in America. In this conversation author Chris Finan explains how that spirit of vigilance has been expressed from the Palmer Raids of 1919 to the Patriot Act of today."--Track sheet. |
Program #822: Title: Greece today. "Stability in the Balkans is a major concern for Greece today. This has led to two major five year development plans aimed at the economic integration of the region. Greece also supports entry into the European Union for the Balkans states and for Turkey; seeing a greater sense of European Community as vital for peace and prosperity. Ambassador Alexandros Mallias explains these modern Greek priorities and their basis in ancient values."--Track sheet. |
Commentary #278: Title: Promoting democracy. "Promoting democracy has long been an important part of American foreign policy. former Congressman Lee Hamilton discusses how we can improve our efforts."--Track sheet. |
Commentary #279: Title: Debate is good for our system. "A lot of Americans get turned off when they see Congress embroiled in disputes over policy matters. Former Congressman Lee Hamilton argues that, far from being a cause of frustration, 'Debate is good for our system.' "--Track sheet. |
