Summary |
The American soprano, Dawn Upshaw, has won worldwide renown over the last ten years for her stage presence and musical gifts. In this film profile we see her at work with her favourite partners: the Broadway repertoire first with Eric Stern in work sessions with the arrangers, then the recording of April in Paris and other Vernon Duke songs in a New York studio. Accompanied by Richard Goode, she performs works by Charles Ives and John Harbison at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. In Salzburg the revival of Saint Francis of Assisi by Olivier Messiaen is an opportunity to rediscover her in a work of rare intensity under the direction of Kent Nagano and Peter Sellars. Finally, during a masterclass at Yale, the advice she gives students we understand how her commitment, the artistic risks she takes, and her sensitivity form the core of her artistry. |
