It analyses the changing cultural frameworks through which the poor came to be considered as needy; the institutions, strategies, and practices devised to assist, integrate, and discipline these populations; and the political alchemy through which the needs of the individual were reconciled with those of the community. While the Bismarckian social insurance programs have long been regarded as the origin of the German welfare state, this book shows how preventive social welfare programs - the second pillar of the welfare state - evolved out of traditional poor relief, and it emphasises the role of progressive reformers and local, voluntary initiative in this process and the impact of competing reform discourses on both the social domain and the public sphere. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Public welfare|zGermany|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008110252|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Charities|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85022665|zGermany|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80125931-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Poor|xServices for|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85104848|zGermany|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n80125931-781|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Poor|xServices for|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85104848|xGovernment policy|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh99005269|zGermany|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80125931-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Public welfare.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1083250 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Charities.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/852404 650 7 Poor|xServices for.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1071142 650 7 Government policy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1353198 650 7 Social policy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1122738 650 7 Politics and government.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1919741 651 0 Germany|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80125931 |xSocial policy|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2001008646|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 651 0 Germany|xPolitics and government.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85054613 651 7 Germany.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1210272 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aFrohman, Larry.|tPoor relief and welfare in Germany from the Reformation to World War I.|dCambridge : Cambridge University Press, 2008|z9780521506038 |w(OCoLC)212858719 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=244542|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
