Cardiovascular disease now accounts for nearly 30 percent of deaths in low and middle income countries each year, and is accompanied by significant economic repercussions. Yet most governments, global health institutions, and development agencies have largely overlooked CVD as they have invested in health in developing countries. Recognizing the gap between the compelling evidence of the global CVD burden and the investment needed to prevent and control CVD, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) turned to the IOM for advice on how to catalyze change. In this report, the IOM recommends that the NHLBI, development agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and governments work toward two essential goals: creating environments that promote heart healthy lifestyle choices and help reduce the risk of chronic diseases; and building public health infrastructure and health systems with the capacity to implement programs that will effectively detect and reduce risk and manage CVD. To meet these goals, the IOM recommends several steps, including improving cooperation and collaboration; implementing effective and feasible strategies; and informing efforts through research and health surveillance. Without better efforts to promote cardiovascular health, global health as a whole will be undermined."--Home page. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Cardiovascular system|xDiseases|xPrevention.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008100123 650 0 Health promotion|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85059591|zDeveloping countries.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85037341-781 650 7 Cardiovascular system|xDiseases|xPrevention.|2fast|0https: //id.worldcat.org/fast/847207 650 7 Health promotion.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 953194 650 12 Cardiovascular Diseases|xprevention & control.|0https:// id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D002318Q000517 650 12 Health Promotion|xmethods.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/ D006293Q000379 651 0 Developing countries|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85037341|xHealth promotion services.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00006005 650 22 Global Health.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D014943 650 22 Developing Countries.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D003906 651 7 Developing countries.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1242969 655 4 Electronic books. 700 1 Fuster, Valentin.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n88211230 700 1 Kelly, Bridget Burke,|d1973-|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2007141284 776 08 |iPrint version:|aNational Research Council (U.S.).
