Race, identity(ies), and politics - - Community problems, collective solutions: Latinos and nonelectoral participation -- Fluid borders: Latinos, race, and American politics. 520 8 This provocative study of the Latino political experience offers a nuanced, in-depth, and often surprising perspective on the factors affecting the political engagement of a segment of the population that is now the nation's largest minority. Drawing from one hundred in- depth interviews, Lisa García Bedolla compares the political attitudes and behavior of Latinos in two communities: working-class East Los Angeles and middle- class Montebello. Asking how collective identity and social context have affected political socialization, political attitudes and practices, and levels of political participation among the foreign born and native born, she offers new findings that are often at odds with the conventional wisdom emphasizing the role socioeconomic status plays in political involvement. Fluid Borders includes the voices of many individuals, offers exciting new research on Latina women indicating that they are more likely than men to vote and to participate in political activities, and considers how the experience of social stigma affects the collective identification and political engagement of members of marginal groups. This innovative study points the way toward a better understanding of the Latino political experience, and how it differs from that of other racial groups, by situating it at the intersection of power, collective identity, and place. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Hispanic Americans|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85061051|zCalifornia|zLos Angeles|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79021240-781|vInterviews. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001682 650 0 Working class|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85073639|zCalifornia|zLos Angeles|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79021240-781|vInterviews.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001682 650 0 Hispanic Americans|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85061051|zCalifornia|zLos Angeles|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79021240-781|xPolitics and government.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002011436 650 0 Hispanic Americans|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85061051|zCalifornia|zLos Angeles|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79021240-781|xEthnic identity.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh00005645 650 0 Hispanic Americans|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85061051|zCalifornia|zLos Angeles|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79021240-781|xSocial conditions.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2001008850 650 0 Social classes|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85123921|zCalifornia|zLos Angeles.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79021240-781 650 0 Power (Social sciences)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85105976|zCalifornia|zLos Angeles.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79021240-781 650 7 Hispanic Americans.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 957523 650 7 Working class.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1180418 650 7 Politics and government.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1919741 650 7 Ethnicity.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/916034 650 7 Social conditions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919811 650 7 Social classes.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1122346 650 7 Power (Social sciences)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1074219 651 0 Los Angeles (Calif.)|xPolitics and government.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008116078 651 0 Los Angeles (Calif.)|xSocial conditions.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008116077 651 7 California|zLos Angeles.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1204540 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Interviews.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423832 655 7 Interviews.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026115 776 08 |iPrint version:|aGarcía Bedolla, Lisa, 1969-|tFluid borders.|dBerkeley : University of California Press, ©2005 |z0520243684|z0520243692|w(DLC) 2004065937 |w(OCoLC)57316621 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=140646|zOnline eBook.
