Summary This documentary is based on over 700 interviews with men and women in the Mexican countryside. The film explores why so many people leave small Mexican towns to work in the United States and what happens to the families and communities they leave behind. The audience is encouraged to think about new and creative ways that the U.S. and Mexican governments can work together to solve the problem of undocumented immigration.
Contents The fantasy = La fantasía -- The rural economy = La economía rural -- The politics = La política -- The money = El dinero -- The families = Las familias -- The way forward = Soluciones.
Note Special features include: interviews; deleted scenes; director commentary.
Local Note Rider University Libraries acknowledges the biased and pejorative nature of the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) “Aliens” “Alien…” and "Illegal aliens" to refer to noncitizens and undocumented immigrants, respectively--and the harm it causes. While a change in terminology was approved by the Library of Congress in 2016, it was not enacted due to opposition by the 115th Congress (2017). As Rider University Libraries uses LCSH as its standard vocabulary, we are currently investigating how to best enact alternative terminology that will still ensure access to all materials on this topic.
Language Dolby soundtrack in English and Spanish, with optional simultaneous English and Spanish subtitles.
Provenance Copy in Rare Books Collection is a gift of Villalobos Buehner and Mary Poteau-Tralie and signed by the director Roy Germano.
