"The Spirit and the Sky" presents a survey of the ethnoastronomy of the nineteenth-century Lakota and relates Lakota astronomy to their cultural practices and beliefs. The center of Lakota belief is the unfathomable and sacred nature of the world in which they live and of the stars above-extraordinary and wakhan (mysterious)-both of which constitute an integral part of this holistic world. Mark Hollabaugh offers a detailed analysis of all aspects of Lakota culture that have a bearing on their astronomy, including telling time, Lakota names for the stars and constellations as they appeared on the Great Plains, and the phenomena of meteor showers, eclipses, and the aurora borealis. Hollabaugh's explanation of the cause of the aurora that occurred at the death of Black Elk in 1950 is a new contribution to ethnoastronomy. 588 0 Print version record and CIP data provided by publisher. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 1800-1899|2fast 650 0 Lakota cosmology.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh2002005132 650 0 Astronomy|zGreat Plains|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh93008702|xHistory|y19th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Indian astronomy|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh93008699|zGreat Plains.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85056998-781 650 0 Indian cosmology.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh98004491 650 0 Cosmology|xHistory|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008101109|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002012475 650 7 Lakota cosmology.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1148334 650 7 Astronomy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/819673 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Indian astronomy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 969046 650 7 Indian cosmology.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 969090 650 7 Cosmology.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/880600 651 7 Great Plains.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1240567 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 710 2 Indiana University, Bloomington.|bAmerican Indian Studies Research Institute.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n88022055 776 08 |iPrint version:|aHollabaugh, Mark.|tSpirit and the sky. |dLincoln : University of Nebraska Press, [2017] |z9781496200402|w(DLC) 2016046918 830 0 Studies in the anthropology of North American Indians. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n83731146 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1510678|zOnline eBook.
