Lavishly illustrated with more than 130 full-color images of stunning rare books, this volume investigates a full range of issues regarding the dissemination of English language and culture through printed works, including the standardization of typography, grammar, and spelling; the appearance of popular literature; and the development of school grammars and dictionaries. Valerie Hotchkiss and Fred C. Robinson provide engaging descriptions of more than a hundred early English books drawn from the Rare Book and Manuscript Library at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and the Elizabethan Club of Yale University. The study nearly mirrors the chronological coverage of Pollard and Redgrave's famous Short-Title Catalogue (1475-1640), beginning with William Caxton, England's first printer, and ending with John Milton, the English language's most eloquent defender of the freedom of the press in his Areopagitica of 1644. William Shakespeare, neither a printer nor a writer much concerned with publishing his own plays, nonetheless deserves his central place in this study because Shakespeare imprints, and Renaissance drama in general, provide a fascinating window on the world of English printing in the period between Caxton and Milton. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 1500 - 1699|2fast 648 7 Geschichte 1500-1700|2swd 650 0 Printing|zEngland|xHistory|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh2010108260|vExhibitions.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001275 650 0 Incunabula|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85064810|zEngland|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n82068148-781|vBibliography|vExhibitions.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001291 650 7 Printing.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1076612 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Incunabula.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/968842 651 0 England|vImprints|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh2008114936|vExhibitions.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001275 651 7 England.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1219920 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Bibliographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919895 655 7 Bibliographies.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01919895|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1919895 655 7 Exhibition catalogs.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01424028|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1424028 655 7 Exhibition catalogs.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1424028 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Exhibition catalogs.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/genreForms/gf2014026098 655 7 Bibliographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026048 700 1 Robinson, Fred C.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n83011950 710 2 Grolier Club.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80085246 776 08 |iPrint version:|aHotchkiss, Valerie R., 1960-|tEnglish in print from Caxton to Shakespeare to Milton.|dUrbana : University of Illinois Press, ©2008|w(DLC) 2007044081 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=569956|zOnline eBook.
