Hotez relocated to Houston to launch Baylor's National School of Tropical Medicine. He was shocked to discover that a number of neglected diseases often associated with developing countries were widespread in impoverished Texas communities. Despite the United States' economic prowess and first-world status, an estimated 12 million Americans living at the poverty level currently suffer from at least one neglected tropical disease, or NTD. Hotez concluded that the world's neglected diseases-which include tuberculosis, hookworm infection, lymphatic filariasis, Chagas disease, and leishmaniasis-are born first and foremost of extreme poverty. In this book, Hotez describes a new global paradigm known as 'blue marble health, ' through which he asserts that poor people living in wealthy countries account for most of the world's poverty-related illness. By crafting public policy and relying on global partnerships to control or eliminate some of the world's worst poverty-related illnesses, Hotez believes, it is possible to eliminate life-threatening disease while at the same time creating unprecedented opportunities for science and diplomacy."--|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Online resource, title from PDF title page (EBSCO), viewed September 7, 2016. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Poor|xHealth and hygiene.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85104839 650 0 Tropical medicine|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85138061|xEconomic aspects.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005484 650 0 World health|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85148199|xEconomic aspects.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005484 650 7 Poor|xHealth and hygiene.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1071078 650 7 Tropical medicine.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1157469 650 7 World health.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1181338 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aHotez, Peter J.|tBlue marble health. |dBaltimore : Johns Hopkins University Press, 2016 |z9781421420462|w(DLC) 2015046697|w(OCoLC)930786505 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1220092|zOnline eBook.
