In the company of her musician friends, the Argentinean lion compellingly performs Bartok. The Hungarian composer Bela Bartok "loves" Martha Argerich, to borrow an expression used by the pianist. This music requiring energy and power is ideally suited for the leonine Argentinean pianist. During two Bartok evenings at the Verbier Festival in 2007, she demonstrated once again her compelling sense of rhythm, which is just as fascinating in her interpretations of Prokofiev and Ravel. The first evening, with her longstanding accomplice, Brazilian pianist Nelson Freire, and with the excellent percussionists Gregory Zuber and Michael Israelievitch, she transports us with the captivating pulsation of the Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussions, a work so modern that it could have been written today. A few days later, with violinist Renaud Capuçon she tackles the First Sonata for Violin and Piano: both performers present us with intense, fiery interpretations of this piece that is so delicate to play. |
