This study begins by investigating the reasons for this growth in interest and analyses the underlying assumptions on which interdisciplinary discussions about space are often based. After tracing back the history of contact between Geography and Literary Studies from both disciplinary perspectives, it goes on to discuss recent academic work in the field and seeks to forge a new conceptual framework through which contemporary discussions of space and literature can operate. The book then moves on to a thorough application of the interdisciplinary model that it has established. Having argued that the experience of contemporary space has rendered questions of home and belonging particularly pressing, it undertakes detailed analysis of how these phenomena are articulated in a selection of recent French life writing texts. The close, text-led readings reveal that whilst not often highlighted for their relevance to the analysis of space, these works do in fact narrate the impact of some of the most significant cultural experiences of the twentieth century, including the Holocaust and the AIDS crisis, upon geo-cultural senses of identity. Home is shown to be a deeply problematic, yet strongly desired, element of the contemporary world. The book concludes by addressing the underlying thesis that contemporary life writing might provide just the 'postmodern maps? that could help not only literary scholars, but also geographers, better understand the world today. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Doubrovsky, Serge|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n85206257|xCriticism and interpretation.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005576 600 10 Guibert, Hervé|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n82052502|xCriticism and interpretation.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005576 600 10 Robin, Régine,|d1939-2021|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n84095694|xCriticism and interpretation.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005576 600 16 Doubrovsky, Serge,|d1928-|xCritique et interprétation. 600 16 Guibert, Hervé|xCritique et interprétation. 600 16 Robin, Régine,|d1939-|xCritique et interprétation. 600 17 Doubrovsky, Serge.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 164888 600 17 Guibert, Hervé.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/90628 600 17 Robin, Régine,|d1939-2021.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/130568 600 17 Guibert, Hervé.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/90628 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 Geschichte 1990-2000|2swd 648 7 1900 - 1999|2fast 650 0 Autobiographies|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85010049|zFrance.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79006404-781 650 0 Authors, French|y20th century|vBiography.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2007100556 650 0 Identity (Psychology) in literature.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh94004952 650 0 Geography in literature.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh94005295 650 0 Autobiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85010050 650 7 Criticism and interpretation.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1198648 650 7 Autobiographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 822593 650 7 Authors, French.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 822016 650 7 Identity (Psychology) in literature.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/966910 650 7 Geography in literature.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/940561 650 7 Autobiography.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/822597 651 7 France.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204289 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1411635 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026049 776 08 |iPrint version:|aJones, Elizabeth H.
