The Triple Frontera is one of the major 'hot borders' in the Western Hemisphere and a site associated with drug and human trafficking, contraband, money laundering, and terrorism. It's also a place where residents, particularly on the Argentine side, are subjected to increased governmental control and surveillance. Jusionyte has inventively centered her ethnographic fieldwork on a community of journalists who investigate and report on crime and violence in the region. There is a fair amount of petty, small-scale illicit trading that goes unreported--this is a consequence of a community invested in promoting the idea that the border is a secure place that does not warrant militarized attention. Her work demonstrates that while media is often seen as a powerful tool for spreading a sense of danger and uncertainty, sensationalizing crime and violence, and creating moral panics, journalists can actually do the opposite. Those who selectively report on illegal activities use the news to tell particular types of stories in an attempt to make their communities look and ultimately be more secure"--Provided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Crime|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85033993 |zTri-Border Area (Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay)|0https ://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2005008298-781 650 0 Crime and the press|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85034005|zTri-Border Area (Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2005008298-781 650 0 Security, International|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85119471|zTri-Border Area (Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2005008298-781 650 0 Border security|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2006007505|zTri-Border Area (Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2005008298-781 650 7 Crime.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/882984 650 7 Crime and the press.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 883031 650 7 Security, International.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1110895 650 7 Border security.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1742239 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aJusionyte, Ieva, 1983-|tSavage frontier |z9780520283510|w(DLC) 2014048461|w(OCoLC)903247661 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=986167|zOnline eBook.
