As Farhan Karim argues, economic scarcity became a central inspiration for architectural modernism in the subcontinent. As India moved from colonial rule to independence, the Indian government, business entities, international NGOs, and intergovernmental agencies took major initiatives to modernize housing conditions and the domestic environment of the state's low-income population. Of Greater Dignity than Riches traces multiple international origins of austerity as an essential ingredient of postcolonial development. By prescribing model villages, communities, and ideal houses for the working class, this project of austerity eventually reduced poverty into a stylized architectural representation. In this rich and original study, Karim explains the postwar and postcolonial history of low-cost housing as an intertwined process of global transferences of knowledge, Cold War cultural politics, postcolonial nationalism, and the politics of economic development. 588 0 Online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on March 28, 2019). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 Low-income housing|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85104841|zIndia|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/n80125948-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Dwellings|zIndia|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh89001523|xDesign and construction|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006372|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Urban poor|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85141323|xHousing|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005716|zIndia|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/n80125948-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 7 Low-income housing.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1003210 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Dwellings.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/899978 650 7 Urban poor|xHousing.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1162523 650 7 Urban poor.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1162512 651 7 India.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1210276 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|z0822965690|z9780822965695 |w(OCoLC)1050364055 830 0 Culture, politics, and the built environment.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2010063672 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=2037233|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
