The main puzzle addressed in the book is why the policy trend of new bilateralism has been pursued in spite of the widely accepted views on political and economic advantages of multilateralism. Methodologically, the book introduces a two-level analytical framework derived from foreign policy theories at the unit level and the mainstream IR theories at the international system level. The case study of EU-Thailand relations shows that in times when multilateralism is in crisis shifts towards a foreign policy pragmatism occur and that the prospects of bilateral engagement, identity formation and rhetorical action facilitate such behavioral change. --Book Jacket. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 590 JSTOR|bBooks at JSTOR Open Access 650 7 Relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1892706 651 0 European Union countries|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh94003571|xRelations|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00007590|zThailand.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79059683-781 651 0 Thailand|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79059683 |xRelations|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh00007590|zEuropean Union countries.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh94003571-781 651 7 European Union countries.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1269470 651 7 Thailand.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205310 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aKiatpongsan, Chaiyakorn.|tEU-Thailand relations.|dAmsterdam : Amsterdam University Press, 2009 |z9789089641649|w(OCoLC)456904724 830 0 IIAS Publication Series. 856 40 |uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt46n0vh|zOnline ebook.
