No aria di bravura is to be found, as would be the case in Bellini's or Puccini's works. In Falstaff, music does not prevail over the action, music holds up the dramatic tension from the beginning to the end. Everything flows naturally. The comedy in Falstaff. The main themes (cross- dressing and revenge) suggest the comical dimension in which the plot will plunge. Not to mention Arrigo Boito's depiction of Falstaff as a farcical character, the opera is bursting with comic situations either stemming from mises en abyme, lies, misunderstandings, sudden development or traps set by the different characters. The atmosphere is exhilarating, as the Glyndebourne audience can testify! Sir John Falstaff, a coarse hero? Drawing its inspiration from Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor (the Bard of Avon's influence on Verdi is well-known), Falstaff presents a shallow, horrendous, despicable, and cynical character. Thus, who is the hero? Women are the heroin. Organized in a "gang," they lead the dance and set traps, not only to the lustful Falstaff, but also to the marital authority. At the end of the day, it is the witty Mrs Quickly who best expresses the moral of the story: Women are cunning as a fox! 546 Sung in Italian; English subtitles. 588 0 Vendor-supplied metadata. 650 0 Operas.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85094914 650 7 Operas.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1046191 655 7 Internet videos.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1750214 655 7 Internet videos.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2011026337 655 7 Video recordings.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2011026723 655 7 Video recordings.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1692913 700 1 Roussillon, François,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/nr2001042793|efilm director. 700 1 Boito, Arrigo,|d1842-1918,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/n80010162|elibrettist. 700 1 Purves, Christopher,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /no99028477|eperformer. 700 1 Christoyannis, Tassis,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/no2006123350|eperformer. 700 1 Kuznetsova, Dina,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ no2007115665|eperformer. 700 1 Lemieux, Marie-Nicole,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n2005012137|eperformer. 700 1 Kučerová, Adriana,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ no2007043283|eperformer. 700 1 Bezdüz, Bülent,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n2006018528|eperformer. 700 1 Holloway, Jennifer|c(Mezzo-soprano),|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2008017633|eperformer. 700 1 Hoare, Peter,|d1965-|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /no2008004729|eperformer. 700 1 Battaglia, Paolo,|d1968-|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n96025439|eperformer. 700 1 Elliott, Alasdair,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ no2003098418|eperformer. 700 1 Jurowski, Vladimir,|d1972-|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/no00021908|econductor. 700 1 |iOpera adaptation of (work):|aShakespeare, William,|d1564 -1616.|tMerry wives of Windsor.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n96064013 700 12 |iContainer of (work):|aVerdi, Giuseppe,|d1813-1901. |tFalstaff.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79130947 710 2 ZDF/Arte (Firm),|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ no2011055240|eproduction company. 710 2 Glyndebourne Enterprises,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/no2010108366|eproduction company. 710 2 François Roussillon et associés,|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2006059913|eproduction company. 710 2 Glyndebourne Festival Chorus,|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n83162661|eperformer. 710 2 London Philharmonic Orchestra,|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n81015501|eperformer. 711 2 Glyndebourne Festival Opera.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n92000328 856 40 |3Medici.tv|uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// www.medici.tv/#!/falstaff-verdi-richard-jones-glyndebourne -festival|zAccess restricted to current Rider University students, faculty, and staff. 901 MARCIVE 20231220 948 |d20181012|cLTI|tlti-aup183 948 |d20171012|cLTI|tlti-aup173 948 |d20170313|cRDT original load 948 |d20170922|clti|tlti-aex 994 C0|bOCL
