Through close readings of both Protestant and Catholic poetry, Kuchar explains how the discourses of 'devout melancholy' helped generate some of the most engaging religious verse of the period. From Robert Southwell to John Milton, from Aemilia Lanyer to John Donne, the language of 'holy mourning' informed how poets represented the most intimate and enigmatic aspects of faith as lived experience. In turn, 'holy mourning' served as a way of registering some of the most pressing theological issues of the day. By tracing poetic representations of religious sorrow from Crashaw's devotional verse to Shakespeare's weeping kings, Kuchar expands our understanding of the interconnections between poetry, theology and emotion in post-Reformation England. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 16th century|2fast 648 7 17th century|2fast 648 7 1500-1700|2fast 650 0 English poetry|yEarly modern, 1500-1700|xHistory and criticism.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2008102956 650 0 Christian poetry, English|yEarly modern, 1500-1700 |xHistory and criticism.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008100197 650 0 Grief in literature.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85057333 650 0 Theology in literature.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh94009148 650 0 Philosophy in literature.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85101002 650 0 Religion in literature.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85112593 650 0 Literature and society|zEngland|xHistory|y16th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008107023 650 0 Literature and society|zEngland|xHistory|y17th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008107024 650 0 Loss (Psychology) in literature.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh94006072 650 7 Grief in literature.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 947910 650 7 Theology in literature.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1149615 650 7 Philosophy in literature.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1060836 650 7 Religion in literature.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1732559 650 7 Literature and society.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1000096 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Loss (Psychology) in literature.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1002636 651 7 England.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1219920 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1411635 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aKuchar, Gary, 1974-|tPoetry of religious sorrow in early modern England.|dCambridge, UK ; New York : Cambridge University Press, 2008|w(DLC) 2008012203 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=234372|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
